So. For those here that play Hearts of Iron IV. A friend and I started a game with Germany and Italy respectively, to try something out. France declared war on Germany when they reoccupied the Rhineland, leading the French Commune to start a civil war. After Italy joined the Axis, they defeated France and a day after the French Commune declared victory in the civil war and Germany and Italy fell back to their prewar borders. Not satisfied the Axis, now joined by Hungary declared war on the French Commune which then sought refuge in the Comitern, dragging the Soviet Union into the war. The French Commune was swiftly conquered with a hard fight to drive the Soviet reinforcements into the sea.
Now France is occupied by Italy and Germany with the Soviets preparing naval invasion. Meanwhile Poland and Czechoslovakia reinforce their border as they are between the belligerents.
It is August 1936.

Whoops. The 'fall back to their borders' part sounds pretty glitchy.

Whoops. The 'fall back to their borders' part sounds pretty glitchy. I've figured out from a similar occurrence later on with the Soviet Union that it has to do with the Civil War. HOI used to have events scripted to handle occasions like (like the Kaiserreich mod still does for IV) that but now they've taken the design philosophy away from many event chains it think there is just one general rule set. So yes. The Soviet Union was invaded and after a long ongoing battle (that I thought we'd lost) due to Yugoslavian meddling (event) they were dragged into the war and joined the Commitern, Czechoslovakia following a day later as it guaranteed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. This caused a sizeable issue for the German and Italian high command with their commitment to the attack on Leningrad. Axis resolve did grind down the Czechs and Yugoslav territories, with the true spirit of the righteous. After a difficult fight the Soviet Army started falling back and a joint Italian-German spearhead conquered Moscow, making good use of its limited but experienced air support. With disgruntled officers rebelling against the Stalin's rule the victorious Axis managed to bring the Soviet Union to capitulation (likely after its Iron ruler met with an accident). Seeing parts of Central Europe partitioned and also reliable governments installed, control of Russia went to its new military strongmen. The Axis in the meantime having successfully defended the German Reich from the Commitern aggression took up its new role amongst the world leaders. It is 1939. Three months later Great Britain declared war on Rexist Belgium (not in the Axis) and the Axis prepare to save the world from Allied and Democratic aggression.

I'm still waiting for the AI to learn how to manage front lines. Last game, Denmark had Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in 1937, Norway in 1938, Sweden in early 1939 and Moscow by early 1941

Actually the new patch was magnificent on this. The AI now really pulls its shit together. Especially noticeable with my new Japan game to try it out. I normally always declare a war on the Guanxi Clique first to take them out early and I actually lost my first invasion attempt due to its defence of the coast. It was quite a shock. I've had to actually start paying attention again, haha.
