At the statements of Sir Owen a sad smile passes over Mealgwyn’s countenance. A soft mutter behind him can be heard from some of the Temple retinue, the Archpriest makes a soothing gesture towards his followers and then waits patiently for the letter to be made up and sealed and then replies to Lugh.
“Though it it does not ring as true in the way he thinks.” With the weary expression returned. “I contacted Archpriest Odell of the Hibernian Temple after the massacres in Umbria to ask for assistance in our coalition to stop the destruction in that Kingdom. Part of that was an intervention on the Isle of Man, where the faithful of my Temple were being persecuted by the Temple of Blood.”
With sadness in his eyes he continues. “I did not presume the Hibernian Temple its followers would act in exactly this way however. Furthermore, their landing in Elmet was even more unexpected as their assistance was specifically against the Temple of Blood its foul influence. I fully intended to speak contact the Archpriest and share my distress with him but was hoping to hold this conclave so a pact of non-military actions was worked out first. This does not remove the fact that, his men were all killed to the last man without any parley nor mercy. It will fall to me to offer succour, and I will take this upon myself and my Temple so a true peace can be made between the Faiths here in Southern Albion.”
“Do remember, at no time was any attempt at talking made by the Old Faith when the Hibernian troops landed. Secondly, the Highpriest invaded the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Camelot, without any diplomatic message. The beasts the young man referenced, summoned by the will of the Highpriest, then did proceed to devour the men of the Elmet levy, who only responded to the invasion of their land. Again, no indication of any will to talk was given and none present survived. Yet that is talk for later.”
Maelgwyn his pose changes slightly, but obvious enough to those that know of the men of Caerleon, they see one whose honour has been impugned.
“As even a patient man such as I has his limits, I would kindly ask of you that your retinue refrains from insulting me in my own home. Even though it are my people who are currently being supressed by Old Faith’s troops through no fault at my own, I have called this council so the King and the Highpriest may find an honourable solution and so religious strife in southern Albion may be much reduced. I have done this without any accusations, only stating clear truths when others did accuse me. However I hope, that the laws of hospitality will be respected. They are part of the old ways that do bind us.”
A short silence follows and one can see his pose return to his normal diplomatic self. With a tilt of the head, and while stepping back lightly, Maelgwyn makes a welcoming gesture with one arm.
“I will retire now, for I have a mass to perform, but hope we may speak later under less trying circumstances.”
