Eltoar makes the rounds in North Umbria shoring up support for King Caern and his policies among the clan leaders. Unsurprisingly Corym, official leader of the of the Isionia clan and unofficial leader fo the conservative faction is once more among those raising concerns.
Corym: Maevïel does not listen to me, why should I go out of my way to support his policies, First Elamïra and now Aelynthia, does Maevïel intend to prostitute all of our princesses to humans?
Eltaor: You always are so refreshingly candid, but I must correct you Hunriel and Adran are both only half human.
Corym: No Hunriel is half-human, The Mercian prince is three quarters human. Thing are going in the wrong direction as far as I and my clan are concerned. Perhaps Lysanthia will marry the Duke of Nemeth polluting the direct royal line with both human blood and possibly madness?
Eltaor: On that point I can reassure you. Lysanthia will marry a full elf. While Maevïel does not share your views on human, well, not on civilized humans, it is well known that humans lack the same ability to channel magic as Aelves do. Maevïel has no intend on watering down the direct lines ability to channel true magic.
Corym: well that some small relief then, but taxes are to high, when will Maevïel lower them to more normal levels?
Eltaor: it would certainly be preferable if taxes could be lowered, but we need to maintain an adequate defence against the Mad King and the risk of undead incursions. While our alliances and friendship with human or partially human realms does gives us some support in those matters I would not expect you in particular to suggest that we rely solely on humans to shield us.
Corym: I suppose not, but are you sure it’s not possible to lower taxes and maintain a defence.
Eltaor: Possible it might be, it all depends on how great a risk of undeads running amok through Umbria you’re willing to tolerate, myself I’d like to keep that number as close to 0 as possible.
Corym: That still doesn’t explain why we need to move the court from North Umbria to Bernicia. Sure the accommodations are temporary but it’s not like you’re making any secrets of the fact that the move is intended to be permanent.
Eltaor: Permanent or at least quite long terms. Bernicia is simply more central to the expanded realm. AN army positioned there is only a few weeks travel from any point in Umbria or Dal Riada. We can fortify that province and use it as a base of defense for the entire realm or for a counterstrike into Bayard.
Corym: So we’re going to build a castle in Bernicia.
Eltaor: That is the plan at some point. The timescale isn’t set.
Corym: Well then, here is the prince of my patience. My youngest son has considerable skill when it comes to engineering. He has spent ten years with the dwarves studying their craft and the last two hundred years perfecting his ability and applying it here. If we need fortification I want them to be well built. Get my son a position on the court and put him in charge of this building program of yours. I will not promise to cease to raise no new concerns, but I will attempt to show some patience.
Eltaor: Your youngest is Delsaran right? I knew he was a builder, but I must say I’m a bit surprised that you’d encourage importing foreign knowledge.
Corym: The dwarves are still fey, humans are not, there’s a difference, and he’s not marrying a dwarf, that’s significant as well. Do we have an understanding.
Eltaor: As I said I’m not sure when exactly we’re starting construction.
Corym: Then I won’t insist that you make the appointment right away, but before you begin, you do need someone to ensure it runs smoothly.
Eltaor: We do, I will need to talk to Delsaran and to Maevïel as well to ensure he agrees, but I think it should be acceptable. Clan Isionia support and your personally is as always appreciated.
