Going through my XP sheet I have found quite a few errors in my bookkeeping.
So to ease administration for me, and to ensure that your characters gain levels when appropriate I will let you keep track of your characters XP.
Starting XP:
What amount of XP did start of game characters have:
They were half way to their next level, so a level 3 starting character had 1800 XP, unless you bought them one or more extra levels, in that case they started at minimum XP required for that level.
What amount of XP do hired characters start with:
They start at the minimum amount required for their level, so a level 3 hired character have 900XP
What amount of XP do followers start with:
Followers progress in level as your regent gain levels, so they can't train for xp, nor do they gain XP for doing actions on their own.
XP per action:
Character actions (except training, adventure & Ply trade-Bodyguard or Ply Trade-commanding troops): 25 XP
Domain actions: 50XP
Training actions: 100XP (if you are training for XP - retraining gives 0 XP)
Bodyguarding: 25 XP unless they counter a threat. In that case they get 250XP
Commanding troops: 20 XP * Level of Character - Limited at 50XP if no risk of battle existed.
Adventure actions: CR of adventure * Level of Character * 20 XP. Minimum 50XP. So a level 2 character on an CR 10 adventure gains 400 XP
Extra bonus to players:
To compensate for errors each and every character you have should get a 25% bonus to xp gained during turn 1-12
Questions and answers:
Q: My regent/other character should be a totally different level by those calculations. What should I do?
A: If your have a character who should be higher level, then write a post in your private forum and raise that character's level. If you have a character who is currently too high leveled compared to these calculations, then count that character as having the least amount of XP needed for that level at the end of turn 12.
Q: I can't remember if I bought my regent a level.
A: Ask if in doubt.
Q: How do I know the CR of an adventure.
A: You use advisor or research actions to find out before hand, or you will be informed once the adventure end.
Q: What about adventures past. What ECL/CR were they.
A: For ease of administration count all past adventures as CR 4. (Some were higher and some were lower, but going through all those adventures past is just too much work, this is without the 25% bonus to xp described above under EXTRA BONUS)
Q: What about characters that were commanding troops in past turns?
A: Disregard lack of risk in calculations of XP from commanding troops in turn 1 to 12, remember to add the 25% bonus to xp here as well
Q: What about the hibernia gambit?
A: Characters there gain XP per turn committed as if they were commanding troops.
Q: What about extraordinary successes on actions?
A: I don't deduct XP for failing actions, so neither will I add XP for succeeding well.
Q: Have my bodyguards ever countered a threat?
A: If you don't know, then the answer is NO!
Q: OMG that is a lot of bookkeeping, can't you just fix your sheet and keep track of my character's XP again?
A: As you said it is a lot of bookkeeping, so I would rather leave XP tracking up to each player.
Q: I took over my domain in turn X. How much XP did my starting characters have?
A: Minimum as described above + 200 per turn for Regents & +100 per turn for lieutenants.
Q: Some of my characters have been rogue for X turns, how much XP did they gain?
A: 25XP per action available to them per turn.
Q: You bastard!! You told me my regent gained a level in turn 11, when in fact by these calculations it should have gained a level in turn 5.
A: Whoops, hopefully such belated increases in levels will be a thing of the past now that you keep track of XP yourselves.
Q: What about extra xp for good roleplay?
A: Good roleplay makes it fun for all and is its own reward. Making a reward based on my specific feeling of good roleplay is not something I feel comfortable with, nor would I like to administrate it. I am quite content with the regency loss hammer to keep you people in line though.
Q: But you could just give every player an XP factor that they multiply their xp with.
A: I could, but how would you feel, if by your standards you were a better role player than player X and you found out player X had 1.5 in XP facter while you only had 1.1? I know that some of the people here talk with each other about such ooc stuff and I don't want to create discontent, or competition to conform to my preferences by rating each players roleplaying abilities according to me.
Q: What if I really don't want to track XP?
A: Don't sweat it, your characters don't need to gain levels.
