No, seriously, I've tried so many times.
But short of establishing some sort of sized kingdom with the most boring religion and most boring family, I find that inevitably if I want the game to actually ever progress towards ending, it requires doing nothing for a gazillion years.
During which time I usually lose interest.
If I keep interest, I spend the same time going through 1-10 years as it would take to speed through 100... but then I also lose interest, because it'll take me soooo long to ever actually finish the game.

I played with personal goals. For instance: I played as count of Fyn with the goal of creating the empire of Scandinavia. Once I got there I also had the empire of Britain, kingdom of Poland, Bohemia and half of Spain... And then I just declared myself winner in my own mind and haven't played since.

See I'd like to progress beyond that and actually bring a (preferably decent as in not ruler of Europe) game into EU IV. But the time to go through the ages...

It is a tradeoff, micromanage your kingdom to make it as effective as possible for its size Vs. Skip through time so you can ever finish.
But yeah. The game is so long that it is hard to keep your interest regardless of strategy.

We actually played 4 hours every week on tuesdays with a group in a gamecafe. Speed setting 2. Let me tell you some of that was still quite hectic. PLaying against the AI, always put the game on hard otherwise it will let you trounce over it if you know how to play. Goes for CK II and EU IV. We play with some kind of victory goals that have changed between games. Looking forward to Stellaris.
You can in fact convert any savegame to EU IV, which makes for some interesting games. I played a save in CK II with a friend 1066-1250 and then we broke up our titles and converted the game.

I keep getting undone by the succession laws that divide your territory amongst your heirs and rebellions when i raise crown authority to change such laws.

In my experience the struggle of keeping three crowns with different succesion laws together is half the game. Can be great fun though.

For tribes, the key is have no kingdoms; high martial skill.
Re-conquer all your duchies every succession: Beat your brothers at war!

The key to running a realm with gavelkind is to murder all your children except one. If murder is not possible, give your spare children church holdings. That stops them from inheriting lands.

Or make sure to never die with more than 1 top tier title, and have a huge personal guard.

Actually as the goal of the game is to spread your family name and power. Gavelkind is not that bad. Elective is my favourite however.

Nonsense. The goal if CK2 is to raze Sweden and salt the fields!
