Is leading an army always a character action, even for regents? I think I've been under the mistaken assumption that taking a Wage War bonus action presumes that the character will be available to lead armies even without speaking a second action for a 'lead troops' adventure, which might explain why my attempt to have a character lead their troops during a battle was glossed over as if it never happened.

It is possible that in fact you led the troops but that the bonus does not apply since in our camp there were already generals very famous ... Sir Estian and Godfred Thraw

Your character who takes a wage war action is generally allowed to lead his troops as well.
Exceptions: If your army is moving far (as in hibernia or on a longer campaign closer to home) then you need to spend a character action for the regent/lt as well
your character was in Nemeth and did his part in affecting the outcome.
In siege warfare the engineers you had were actually more important to the outcome than the fact that your regent was there, thus your own engineers stole your thunder. (Although you commanded them skillfully.)
You are welcome to write your own colorful descriptions of glory gained when mine doesn't fulfill your expectations.

Well bugger I've wasted multible actions leading an army and waging war.
