Her rule was a tenuous one, marked as it was by incessant fighting, resource shortages, intrigue and skullduggery. Yet in the chaos that surrounded her, she was a beacon of hope and light for many. So strong was her call to order that she fashioned order not just around her, but in her wake too. Despite a very prolonged absence, with some claiming her still absent, the guild she had led had held together strong and steadfast. Order reigned for the most part, albeit not supreme, but to an extent that might not otherwise be expected. After all, by all accounts the guilders had lost their admiral, the bulk of their fleet, and had either sold or hired out the remainder of their vessels. Yet they had held on, conducting business "as usual" as much as that was possible, which was to say not very. Things had been, and still were, tumultuous. Some guilders had lost faith, but it seemed enough still held onto the idea of a united Southwestern Trade association. The faith was rekindled as news that Elyssia not only still lived, but that she had established herself as Queen of the Islanders, and Admiral of the Southwestern Traders. Such news might convince persons such as the Cheeserounds Kings to rethink their allegiances and perhaps return to the fold. Yet she was still weeks away as far as news was concerned, so the guild's challenges were not yet done.
"The sea is, after all, a harsh mistress, and any who would claim rulership over it is but a fool," Elyssia addressed the crowd, "We must take care not to make the same mistakes as these so-called Free Pirates have made, thinking themselves above the laws of the sea." As mentioned, the rule was not quite as firm as could be desired, but it was getting there. A lot of manure had gone down to get to where she was, and while there was nothing she took back, there were some things she regretted having had to do. "And as the laws of the sea apply to us all, so too must they apply here."
Some among the crowd had been mere islanders with little to go by when she had rushed them into action against the Bayardians - ostensibly and vocally her allies - and in a manner of speaking she had assured victory. Yet it was never victory over Bayard she had sought, for the King of Bayard remained a recognized friend of both the Southwestern Traders and Elyssia. Circumstances had merely dictated that she make a display of force and leadership to assert herself over the questionable and arguably barbaric actions of the Bayardians. To that extent, she had succeeded... at least somewhat. Yet her rule was not quite cemented. At any time, she risked rogue Bayardian officers, discontent islanders, or hostile free pirates to rise to challenge her. Some indeed already doing so. Her task was far from completed.
"And while these laws are put into force by those who understand the plight of their fellow sailor," Elyssia declared, "We shall reconnect with the lands of Albion. From here to there, goods will flow, upon the seas, if the seas will it. Yet to allow for such a flow, it has come to my attention that a grave danger threatens all of Albion, and thus the world itself." She paused for effect. "It is my intent, as Admiral and Queen, to provide the aid that we are capable of, in the manner we are best capable, through our expertise at sea."
Tenuous though it might be, reports from her guilders about the losses suffered by Albion worried her. It seemed reasonable to begin preparations to perhaps lend aid to the rest of Albion, in one way or another?
