As a leading guilder with a growing skill-set within mercantile matters, but still somewhat stuffy in terms of delving too deeply into books rather than enjoying the open sea, Gwyndaf was the contact of choice for the Umbrian court. Unlike many other merchants, he understood better than most the intricacies of dealing with royalty and their courtiers, who often regarded themselves as extensions of their royals and expected to be treated accordingly, whether or not such treatment was actually deserved or warranted. Gwyndaf was, if anything, good at setting that aside and ignoring the minor and petty insults that royalty seemed adept at flinging about them with carefree grace, as if the whole world belonged to them.
Of course, it didn't, as Gwyndaf had realized. It belonged to those with the most coin and resources, and the goal of any good honest merchant was to turn coin into more resources, and resources into more coin, then repeating that cycle ad infinitum. As Gwyndaf liked to say, who needs transmutation when you've got markets? No reason to create something out of thin air, when you make even more out of something and build upon that.
"As you can see, we have a large assortment of wares, not exclusively furs and leather, and not exclusively suitable for high nobility. Thanks to the confluence of furs that traditionally end up here, there's a lot of leather to be found between here and Wessex. Ordinarily, purchases such as yours would ultimately be based out of Wessex, where the wares are sorted according to quality and price."
"Now I'm led to understand that you are looking for a particular style of leather." Gwyndaf confirms, "Cost is an issue as you're purchasing a large quantity. Similar quality will be desirable. Specific traits sought are that it needs to be light, flexible and yet defensible, meaning tough or thick. Will your own craftsmen be working the leather, or will you be wanting our leatherworkers services as well?"
"As far as delivery, we can arrange for delivery through our Northern Trader contacts in Umbria. Shipping along the western coast will be relatively fast and the items, leather or armour as desired, can be delivered within a season at most, better if the weather is good. The price for shipping will ultimately be greatly reduced by the sheer quantity I understand you are seeking to purchase."
"So the next step then, if everything I've mentioned so far is true and accurate, will be to review the wares and crafts we have available that would meet your needs and wants? Let's first take a look at some sheepskin. That's quite plentiful. Follow me please." Gwyndaf proceeded to let the Umbrian envoys into a tannery that was hard at work tanning numerous sheepskins from Dumonia and Wessex.
