Seeing as the young sailor was dragged out of the water, Victor nodded approvingly at the furs being collected to drape her. The weather that day was nice. A soft breeze in the air, some clouds rolling the right way and just enough sunlight. But no matter the weather, it was winter, and the air had a chill to it. None of which mattered either, because the sea was always cold and it was always heartless. A strong current could rip anyone away with scant hope of rescue and even with rescue, the cold waters on the warmest of summer days gave few hours to live.
Her skin was already blue in spots, though she wasn't shivering. "You're a lucky lass," he told the sailor, "Any other ship and you'd have been lost to the waves."
"Thank you, Commodore." she spoke weakly, looking down.
"I hear you've got some talent. I'm not the Admiral; I don't weep for the dead. But I do weep for lost talent. It would have been a shame if you hadn't been rescued." Victor said, in a rare moment of being nice. "You got a spot on this ship because of that talent, despite your lack of experience. I expect you to keep that spot, understand?"
"Yes, Commodore." She spoke in a dull monotone.
"You'll get your feeling back soon enough, but you don't get to eat or drink until your skin turns back to something more... alive and warm. Keep your wits about you. Life upon the seas can be ripped away with you in but a single moment. And I'd rather you help me rip away the lives of pirates than your own, understand?"
"Yes, Commodore." She repeated.
"Good. You're relieved from your post for this watch. Your task is to get better, so you can get back to work. We've got a long and arduous journey ahead of us." He didn't need to turn his attention back to the ship. Captain Torsen was doing a fine job of commanding his vessel. He surveyed the other ships, making sure they were in the correct formation and following orders. The weather might not be as good any other day and if they weren't able to follow orders today, then they'd have trouble following orders on a bad day. Instead, he went ahead and reviewed the charts and information collected so far. He almost knew the route off by heart by now.
They'd get the damn pirates some day. Mainly thanks to talented crew like that lass, and experienced crew like the sailors who saved her.
